This class fulfills the classroom training requirement from Texas DPS to get a Texas License to Carry. It is specifically approved by the state of Texas and we are an official online course provider for Texas for the LTC class.

Once purchased, you will immediately have access to the online class. At the completion of the course, you will be issued an LTC-101 certificate of completion. This certificate can be taken to any Texas LTC instructor for the proficiency demonstration (shooting qualification). After the proficiency demonstration, all of the training required for a Texas LTC will be completed.

Steps to Get Your License to Carry

Online LTC Class

Take this approved class online class, which fulfills the classroom training requirement set by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Qualification

Also referred to as the proficiency demonstration. 50 round shooting qualification that can be completed with any Texas LTC instructor.

Application and Fingerprinting

Once the training is complete, the application and fingerprinting are completed through Texas DPS.

FAQ and Information

  • Is this class approved by the state of Texas?

    Yes. The instructor, Joel Kuchenski, is certified under Texas Government Code 411.188 and 411.190 to administer the LTC Online Course. This class is for the official Texas License to Carry.

  • How long is the online LTC class?

    The total class length is about 4.5 hours long. It is broken into 15-20 minutes segments so that you can start and stop throughout until finished.

  • How much time do I have to take the class?

    By default, you will have 6 months to complete the class. If for any reason you need more time, simply let us know and extensions can be provided.

  • Is there a test at the end?

    There is a short 25 question multiple choice and true/false quiz at the end. It is primarily common-sense gun safety type questions. Every question in the quiz is covered during the class.

  • Is a certificate of completion given for this class?

    Yes. You will receive a DPS LTC-101 certificate, certifying that you have completed the official Texas License to Carry classroom training.

  • How old do I need to be to take this class and get a License to Carry?

    Anyone at any age can take this course. To get a Texas LTC though, you must be 18 years old or older. There is no longer a minimum age of 21 years old.

  • Can I purchase this class as a gift for someone else?

    Yes. When purchasing the course, just be sure you are logged out and use the persons email address you will be gifting the class to. They will receive the order emails and instructions on how to login.

Shooting Qualification

After this online LTC class is completed, every Texas License to Carry a Handgun applicant must also complete the proficiency demonstration (shooting qualification) with a Texas LTC instructor. This consists of the following components:

  1. Range Instruction – opportunity for the LTC instructor to verify you understood the LTC class material and to go over range safety.
  2. Proficiency Demonstration – 50 round qualification with a B27 target.

Applicants must score a 70% or higher to pass. That is 175 points out of a possible 250 points. There are multiple rings on the target for scoring. Everything in the 8 ring and in is 5 points, inside the 7 ring is 4 points and outside the 7 ring but still in the body is 3 points.

Qualification Course of Fire:

Stage 1: Twenty shots (20) will be fired from 3 yards.

A. Five (5) shots fired in a “One Shot Exercise” 2 seconds allowed for each shot.
B. Ten shots (10) fired in a “Two Shot Exercise” 3 seconds allowed for each two shot sequence.
C. Five (5) shots fired in 10 seconds

Stage 2: Twenty shots (20) will be fired from 7 yards – fired 5 stages.

A. Five (5) shots will be fired in 10 seconds
B. Five (5) shots will be fired in 2 stages:
1. Two (2) shots will be fired in 4 seconds
2. Three (3) shots will be fired in 6 seconds
C. Five (5) shots fired in a “One Shot Exercise” 3 seconds allowed for each shot.
D. Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds.

Stage 3: Ten shots (10) fired from 15 yards – fired in two 5-shot strings.

A. Five (5) shots fired in two stages:
1. Two (2) shots fired in 6 seconds.
2. Three (3) shots fired in 9 seconds.
B. Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds.

B27 LTC qualification target

Joel Kuchenski is the lead instructor for the Texas License to Carry a Handgun class. Joel has almost a decade of experience as a police officer for a large municipal police department in Texas. 

As a patrol officer, Joel worked multiple functions, including functions as a field training officer, tactical adjunct instructor, firearms instructor and CAST (counter assault strike team) member. Later, he moved to full time position as a cadet training instructor at the police academy. During this time, he taught cadets going through the academy and received additional certifications as a driving instructor and Taser instructor through TCOLE. With over 1000 hours of documented firearms and tactics training, this background allows Joel to teach classes with real world experience that gives a perspective and insight not provided elsewhere.
